The majestic bald eagle became the centre of attraction Saturday during the first day of this community’s annual Eagle Watch.
The eagles are lured into camera range by freshly killed chicken carcasses and scores of photographers, lined up at the side of a farmer’s field, try for a once-in-a-lifetime photo.
"We know there is a healthy eagle population in the surrounding area," said eagle watch co-ordinating committee member Richard Hennigar.
The eagles normally begin waiting for the free chicken buffet between 8 a.m. and 10 a.m. This year marks the 20th anniversary for the Eagle Watch. In past years, it has not been unusual to see between 1,200 and 1,800 spectators over the two weekends, Hennigar said.
Proceeds from the two weekends go to support the Sheffield Mills community hall as well as other non-profit groups in the area.
