US prison inmates raise rare frogs, butterflies
Dan Pacholke, prisons director for the state Department of Corrections,  said
It makes sense that we engage in activity that make prisons safe to run, reduce negative inmate behavior and contribute to the community,"

"It's quite a leap of faith to let someone handle endangered frog eggs," said Dan Pacholke

Pacholke co-directs the Sustainability in Prisons Project, a partnership with The Evergreen State College that involves regional zoos, nonprofit groups, the state Department of Fish and Wildlife and other state and federal agencies.

"We have inmates at the table who are making substantive contributions to the science," said Carri LeRoy, a faculty member at Evergreen who co-directs the project.

Σωφρονιστικό ίδρυμα Washington State Penitentiary prison in Walla Walla.

Στο ίδρυμα αυτό, ο καθηγητής εντομολογίας David James  (associate professor of entomology at Washington State University) άρχισε φέτος να εργάζεται με κρατούμενους για τη διατήρηση της πεταλούδας (Monarch butterflies) και την παρακολούθηση της μεταναστευτικής της διαδρομής.

Prison officials say it's a logical pairing. They consider inmates ideal candidates for conservation projects since they can work in a controlled environment and have a lot of time to dedicate. The research also allows inmates to contribute a broader social good, officials say.
Inspired by the frog program and other operations, David James, a Washington State University professor this year began working with inmates at the Washington State Penitentiary prison in Walla Walla to raise and tag Monarch butterflies to track their migratory path.
The inmates were able to raise about 500 butterflies from a batch of about 600 to 700 eggs in their first attempt.
David James, associate professor of entomology at WSU, said, "If we reared them, we'd be lucky to have half (that survival rate)."
James explained that prisoners are uniquely equipped to do the work
Often when you're rearing butterflies you need to spend a lot of time with them. You can't just go away for the weekend or leave the lab overnight," he said, adding "there's no doubt that this type of program can be beneficial to them, as well as conservation and scientific research."

σωφρονιστικό ίδρυμα Cedar Creek Corrections Center, a medium-security prison in western Washington
στο ίδρυμα αυτό ο 28χρονος Taylor Davis  και ο 25χρονος συγκρατούμενος του Mathew Henson, εκτρέφουν  βατραχάκια (του είδους Oregon small black-spotted frog ,an animal once widespread in the Puget Sound area) που θα απελευθερώσουν στη φύση τη Δευτέρα.

22-9-12 US prison inmates raise rare frogs, butterflies
In one project, at the Mission Creek Corrections Center for Women in Belfair, inmates last year began helping state biologists, the Oregon Zoo and others breed an orange and black flecked butterfly known as the Taylor's checkerspot.
The offenders had success in their first season, as more than 700 Taylor's checkerspots were released onto south Puget Sound prairies this year.
The inmates also raised more than 3,600 caterpillars for release next year, about 50 percent more than expected.
Their efforts include breeding threatened butterflies and growing native flowers and prairie grasses.
A Department of Defense grant paid for a new greenhouse at the prison, because the military wants to boost the declining population of the rare butterflies.

The Taylor's checkerspot is a candidate for protection under the federal Endangered Species Act, and one of its prime habitats is near an artillery range at Joint Base Lewis-McChord. If the butterfly becomes federally protected, the military could be forced to change how it operates to protect the insect's habitat, project officials said.

ΒΡΑΣΜΕΝΗ ΝΥΧΤΕΡΙΔΑ στην ΤΑΙΛΑΝΔΗ, τη ρίχνουν ζωντανή σε βραστό νερό-για να μη κολλήσουν κάποια ασθένεια από τη νυχτερίδα-Capture a bat, chuck it live into a vat of boiling water, season it with spices, and mash it into paste to create this potentially harmful dish (bats often carry many diseases). Andrew Zimmern of Travel Channel's Bizarre Food America tried the hard-to-locate treat in the hills outside Chang Mai in the heart of the golden triangle in Thailand.

The boiled bat is a much appreciated dish in Asia. It sells for a considerable amount and it’s considered by many a delicacy. It can be found in Fiji, but also other Asian countries and those that had it said it tastes like chicken. You will never know until you have a try!

ΜΥΑΛΟ ΣΚΙΟΥΡΟΥ, Squirrel brains are a regional delicacy in Appalachian regions in Kentucky. Popular recipes include scrambling squirrel brains with eggs or including the meat in a stew known as burgoo.

In recent years, however, doctors have warned against squirrel consumption because of the possibility that squirrels carry a variant of fatal mad cow disease.

A delicacy of Cambodia, fried tarantulas are consumed primarily in towns such as Skuon, where they are sold in stalls at food markets. Crispy tarantulas with lime and kampot black pepper dip is served at Friends in Phnom Penh.

Locals began eating the eight-legged creatures in order to stave off famine during the reign of Khmer Rouge in the 1970s. These edible spiders are fried in oil and contain gooey insides with a crunchy exterior.
ΦΙΔΟΚΡΑΣΟ,   Shots of snake blood are an adventurous drinking pastime of Southeast Asia and can be experienced at locations like the Huaxi Market in Taipei. To prepare, hawkers slice a snake along its underbelly and drain its blood into a glass filled with rice wine or grain alcohol. Snake bile can also be extracted from the gallbladder and consumed as a shot.

Other forms of snake wine, known as steeped snake wine, are found in large glass jars of rice wine containing the body of a poisonous snake. Don't worry; the venom won't harm you because of the wine's high alcohol content.

ΣΚΟΥΛΗΚΙΑ, Sago worms are the larvae of sago palm weevil, a type of snout beetle eaten in regions of Southeast Asia. To eat them raw, grab the worm by the head and bite off its squirming body.

Sago worms have a gooey, fatty texture when eaten alive and a bacon-like taste when fried. Give them a try at Nibong Seafood Restaurant in Sarawak, Malaysia; the sago palm, where the worms are found, is widely cultivated there.

Last but not least, you can wash all those foods down with a bottle of wine. Used as a cure in some parts of Korea, the wine is made by stuffing three day old mice into the bottle of rice wine and left about a year to combine flavors.

6-7-12 Illegally Sold Bear Cub Is Rescued In Ukraine
A four-month-old bear cub that was illegally sold by a Ukrainian zoo to animal traders has been rescued by an animal charity.
Nastia was
snatched from her mother
in Lutsk zoo and forced into a transport box that was much too small.
Traders bought the cub so she could pose next to paying tourists in photos.
The kidnapping was captured on video which showed the animal screaming and her anxious mother pacing in her cage.
But on Thursday the charity, FOUR PAWS, sent project leader and veterinarian Dr Amir Khalil to examine Nastia.
